Black Mountain National Park

Drive 25km south of Cooktown to the Black Mountain lookout for memorable views of the mysterious looming boulders that form the lichen-blackened slopes. Steeped in Aboriginal legend, find out why Black Mountain is a special story place for the Kuku Yalanji people. There are many stories about the mystery surrounding these mountains, often involving people going missing. In the past cattle have been lost here, their owners who went looking for them, and even a member of the local constabulary who came to investigate. The rocks are also home to some very large pythons. Climbing on the rocks is discouraged.
