Mount Cook National Park

The rugged rainforest-clad granite slopes of Mount Cook form the scenic backdrop to Cooktown. Drive to the Mount Cook car park on Hannan Drive and take a strenuous but rewarding 4hr return hike through rainforest and tropical woodland to lookouts at the summit. Enjoy stunning views over the township of Cooktown and the Endeavour River valley to the west, and the Great Barrier Reef and northern Wet Tropics world heritage areas to the east. Keep an eye out for pied-imperial pigeons and buff-breasted paradise kingfishers in the summer months.
